The first MLA International Symposium, held in June 2016, brought participants to several venues in Düsseldorf, Germany. The symposium opened on the evening of Thursday, 23 June, with two plenaries, “Citizens without Borders” and “Dialogue on Cosmopolitanism,” held at the Malkasten art center in central Düsseldorf. The evening also included a cruise on the Rhine, offering participants views of the city skyline and the famous Rheinturm tower.
Sessions on Friday, 24 June, were held at the Malkasten and the historic Haus der Universität, formerly a palace and now part of Heinrich-Heine-Universität. The evening concluded with a special reception at the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) in the picturesque Marktplatz, where the mayor of Düsseldorf offered remarks on the symposium theme, Other Europes.
Events on the final day brought attendees to the campus of Heinrich-Heine-Universität, the MLA’s partner for the symposium. Proceedings closed with a plenary entitled “Dreams and Nightmares,” which highlighted both the challenges and successes of European integration.
